About the geography

The educational map uses simplified geographic boundaries.

Opposite latitude. Longitude shifted by 180°. Coordinates describe the selected point.

02 / ENTER THE THOUGHT EXPERIMENT

Down. Through. Up.

Imagine a straight, empty tunnel through the center. Move the traveler and compare the real layers with a deliberately simplified model of motion.

IDEAL MOTION · REAL LAYERS

The animation assumes a vacuum, no friction, no rotation and a spherical Earth of uniform density. Its clock is illustrative. The real layer diagram does not supply the model’s density.

Layer boundaries are approximate. The thin crust is enlarged for visibility.

What did you expect?

Choose before revealing the explanation. There is no score to chase; notice which picture of the world your answer relies on.

What is evidence, and what is a model?

Layer boundaries are rounded; Earth’s mean radius is about 6,371 km. The 35 km crust marker is illustrative: crust varies greatly in thickness. Temperatures are broad estimates, not a thermometer reading along your route.

USGS describes a center near 6,000°C; interior temperatures are inferred and estimates vary.
